A Treasure of Tagore's Writings Rabindranath Tagore (7 May 1861 -7 August 1941), also lovingly called Gurudev, was an Indian poet. He has also been recognized asa celebrated novelist, painter, composer and philosopher who changed the way Bengali language, literature and music was perceived, Tagore won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913, which made his work accessible to and renowned among Western scholars as well. Some of his well-known compositions comprise Gitanjali (Offerings of Songs), Cora (Fair-Faced), and Ghare-Baire (The Home and the World). He was also a cultural reformer and polymath who modernized Bengali art by repudiating strictures binding it to Indian classical forms. His greatness as a poet is emphasized by the fact that two of his compositions serve as national anthems for two different nations: lane Gana Mann (The Soul of the People) for India and Amor Shonar Bangla (My beautiful Bengal) for Bangladesh.
