ABOUT THE BOOK

Annus Horribilis is concerned with the violence of thinking, alone.
The voice in these poems cover a range of subjects, such as mental
health, drug use, relationships, family, friendship, external disintegration,
the labour of loving, being loved and of caring. The poems move through
the often unforgiving and inescapable loneliness of attending to these
themes, in the recesses of one's mind, where the familiar becomes
foreign, the quotidian becomes a scene of absolute hostility, and where a
word otherwise spoken easily becomes incommunicable. The book
grapples with a (habitually futile) desire to communicate what should
only be communicable; they charge language in search of form, of image,
rhyme or metaphor-some friend in language-that won't lead to
misunderstanding, or worse, silence. As Allen Grossman would say, this
book is 'a communication system of the last resort', and seeks to find the
language in which thought might survive, and perhaps even reach out
towards others.
