About the Author
Oscar Wilde (1854–1900) was a celebrated playwright, poet, and novelist whose sharp wit and vibrant personality made him one of the most influential figures of the late Victorian era. Born in Dublin, Wilde studied at Trinity College and later at Oxford University, where he developed his reputation as a brilliant scholar and an advocate of aestheticism—the philosophy of art for art’s sake.
Wilde’s literary career soared with his plays, including The Importance of Being Earnest and An Ideal Husband, which are celebrated for their wit and social commentary. The Picture of Dorian Gray, his only novel, cemented his place in literary history, offering a bold critique of vanity, excess, and the darker facets of human nature.
Despite his success, Wilde’s life was marked by scandal and tragedy. His wit and courage in the face of adversity have made him an enduring icon, while his works continue to captivate and inspire readers around the world.
