கப்பலோட்டிச் சிறை சென்ற வ.உ.சி. வறிய நிலையிலிருந்தபோது அவருக்கு இந்தியத் தமிழர்கள் கைகொடுத்தார்களோ இல்லையோ தென்னாப்பிரிக்கத் தமிழர்கள் பேருதவி புரிந்தனர். காந்தி வழியாகவும் இந்தப் பொருளுதவி 1916இல் வந்துசேர்ந்தது. இதன் தொடர்பில் ஒரு விவாதம் பல காலமாக நிகழ்ந்துவந்திருக்கிறது. சுருக்கமாகச் சொன்னால், வ.உ.சி.க்குப் பணம் தராமல் காந்தி ஏமாற்றிவிட்டார் என்பதே அதன் சாரம். இதுவரை வெளிவராத வ.உ.சி. காந்தி கடிதப் போக்குவரத்தின் அடிப்படையில் இந்த விவாதத்திற்கு இந்நூல் முற்றுப்புள்ளி வைக்கிறது. தென்னாப்பிரிக்கத் தமிழரின் பின்புலம், அவர்களுக்கும் வ.உ.சி.க்குமான தொடர்பு ஆகியவற்றையும் இந்நூல் விவரிக்கிறது. வ.உ.சி.யின் மனைவி மீனாட்சி அம்மாளின் தனித்தன்மையான ஆளுமை முதல்முறையாகத் துலக்கம்பெறுகிறது.
உணர்ச்சிக் கொந்தளிப்பும் அறிவுசார் சுவாரசியமும் மிகுந்த இந்நூலை, வ.உ.சி. எழுதிய எட்டும் காந்தி எழுதிய பதினொன்றுமாக மொத்தம் பத்தொன்பது கடிதங்கள் அணிசெய்கின்றன.
When V.O. Chidambaram Pillai was jailed and in a vulnerable state, whether he was helped by Indian Tamils or not, South African Tamils were of great help to him. This financial aid also came in 1916 through Gandhi as well. There has been a debate over this for a long time, about whether Gandhi reneged on his promise by not paying V.O.C. This book puts an end to this discussion by unearthing previously unpublished letters between V.O.C and Gandhi. The book also describes the background of the South African Tamil community and their relationship with V.O.C. The unique personality of Meenakshi Ammal, the wife of V.O.C., has been represented with clarity for the first time.
This book, which is full of emotional turmoil and intellectual interest, contains 8 letters written by VOC and 11 written by Gandhi ( total of nineteen letters).
