About the Author

Harriet Beecher Stowe was born on June 14, 1811, in Litchfield, Connecticut. Her father, Lyman Beecher, was a leading Congregationalist minister, committed to social justice. Harriet looked up to her father from an early age, and learnt to stand up for what was right. Harriet was sent to the Litchfield Female Academy, when she was ten years old, and moved to Hartford, Connecticut when she was thirteen. She was a pupil-teacher in a school there, run by her sister Catherine. When Harriet was twenty years old, she became the principal assistant at a new college for girls, Catherine founded at Cincinnati.
