Author Rathnakumar Raghunath’s latest French poetry book, Hémorragie Oculaire, is, hands down, my most favourite book read in 2023 for sure, closely followed by his Charcuterie of Thoughts. It’s also one of my favourite French books OF ALL TIME. As someone, who, like Rathna, is passionate about the French language, it is true that everything sounds way better in French, in my opinion. This book left me feeling, above anything else, so proud of Rathna, in general yes, but especially for writing in French, and for simply being in my life. The sense of gratitude I felt for knowing this genius writer and gem of a person is at its peak right now.
Hémorragie Oculaire is filled with passion, hope, love, loss, sadness, and in true Rathna style, everything human, essentially. I am absolutely in awe of this masterpiece that has already found a special place in my heart. If a book makes me shed even a single tear, that means it has done something magical, and this one did just that. It comes as no surprise to me, however, as Rathna is a brilliant writer who makes even the most profound stuff sound simple, relatable and provides a sense of belonging to his readers, in knowing we’re not alone.
I would have loved to write this review in French, but I want the entire world to know how AMAZING, BEAUTIFUL and WONDERFUL this book is, so I chose to write it in English. You might not be able to read the book, but now you know it’s incredible. I am, once again, in love with another Rathnakumar Raghunath book. However, with this one, I’m a bit more in love. From the time I read Hémorragie Oculaire, it’s all that’s been on my mind, and I’m sure it’s going be that way, always.
I salute and bow down to Rathna, you are simply magical. Please write more in French, which reminds me, I can only imagine how stunning the French edition of Comeuppance, La Louve Vengeresse, will be. I am so looking forward to it. Thank you for blessing and healing the world with your words. More power to you, R! 🥹❤️
